Healthcare alliance cuts costs, boosts hospital performance

Nearly 300 hospitals across 40 states are working together to enact process improvement in their facilities, thanks to a collaborative put together by the Premier healthcare alliance.
Since kicking off the QUEST(R): High Performing Hospitals initiative three years ago, charter members have been able to reduce spending by nearly $4.5 billion while simultaneously boosting quality of care and preventing nearly 25,000 deaths. They achieved these results by analyzing factors such as cost, patient experience, evidence-based care and mortality to identify areas needing attention, then came up with healthcare process improvement initiatives to boost their performance.
"These are practices that can be adopted by any hospital in the nation seeking to make systemwide improvements by comparing their performance with a higher standard of care," said Susan DeVore, Premier president and CEO, in a statement.
For instance, Dallas-based Methodist Health System, in partnership with Premier, was able to save more than $6.5 million by adopting a new supply chain metric.
Member hospitals can realize additional savings by meeting with Lean Six Sigma consulting specialists and national healthcare experts.
