Lean Six Sigma in the legal industry

Lean Six Sigma originated in the manufacturing industry, but the process improvement methodology has since been successfully adapted across a wide range of organizations in a number of industries. Everywhere from healthcare facilities to the Armed Forces have used it to pinpoint areas of inefficiency and cut down on costs.

According to a recent article by Chris Bull of Edge International Consulting, the approach is also becoming popular among law firms and in-house legal departments.

Often, process improvement projects are focused on particular practices, service lines or work types rather than being firm-wide. Starting small can help provide the 'proof of concept" many of those in the industry require before committing to an efficiency improvement approach.

"Actual 'proof of concept,' rather than trying to rally the firm around grand concepts ahead of time, is almost always the secret to successful change," Bull notes.

Typically, law firms use Lean Six Sigma and similar methodologies to address challenges associated with profitability and productivity. However, a recent report by Gartner Research revealed that one-third of business process management projects will fade out because of executive power struggles, lack of collaboration and resistance to change. Bringing in business process management consultants can help unify an organization behind an initiative.
